Western to ensure reliable water service during California’s heat advisory and Flex Alerts

Western has backup power generators available to deploy to key facilities during an outage.

RIVERSIDE, CA – The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Riverside County beginning Monday, Aug. 17 through Thursday, Aug. 20, and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) has declared a warning for the California grid and may call for rotating outages.

In the event of an outage, Western crews have put precautions in place and are standing by to continue providing water and wastewater (sewer) service for customers.

“Riverside County is no stranger to hot weather. Western prepares year-round for unplanned outages and stands ready to provide water service 24/7, 365 days per year,” said Western’s General Manager Craig Miller.

To meet customer needs during power outages and other emergencies, Western has ensured that key critical facilities have the flexibility, agility, and equipment to sustain prolonged and expansive power outages. Western builds, tests, and updates a range of processes and protocols to ensure exceptional emergency preparedness in all facets of its operations.

By taking a proactive emergency preparedness approach and investing in system redundancy, Western has backup power generators available to deploy to key facilities during an outage. Other advanced planning activities have included the equipping of key critical facilities such as pump stations with quick “plug-in” capacity to expedite hookups of portable power systems.

Finally, Western coordinates closely with Southern California Edison (SCE), Western’s power provider, on power-related disruptions to operations. In addition to coordinating with SCE, Western is also taking action to lower power usage during critical Flex Alerts without affecting service to customers.

“Western is doing its part to help the state by reducing our power use during peak periods while still making sure our customers have the water they need,” said Miller.

While Western does not consider Flex Alerts or rolling blackouts an emergency, customers should always stay prepared. In advance of an emergency or large-scale disaster, all customers are encouraged to refresh family emergency preparedness plans and take steps to have water supplies on hand to meet basic needs for up to three days.
